Shop Small

This week is Indie week which is all about shopping small and supporting independent businesses. We are joining the #justacard campaign which is being organised on social media. Essentially it is about us all supporting one another - which could be as simple as by buying 'just a card' from you favourite independent. You can find out more by clicking over and following @justacard on instagram.

Part of being a small business means that I am constantly on the look out for new pieces, designer makers and brands that will fit with my shop ethos; when I'm on the search I often come across brands or small scale designers that I love but that might not be quite right for what I stock. I also know that not everyone will be 'my customer', but by sharing what others are doing, I can help spread the word help them find each other. I wanted to support other businesses by sharing some of my favourites - in case you haven't yet come across them and in case you are 'their customer'

So in no particular order here are some of my favourites right now:

Jonathan Lawes - Original, colourful and bold artwork.

We share a joint passion for neon and geometrics and his work is perfect for anyone who loves shape and colour. Jonathan mixes unusual colour combinations that 'just work'! I love that he has a range of prints in wide variety if sizes which is great for a mixture of budgets. Weald HandmadeThoughtfully produced leather goods with an understated style.

Weald Handmade's hand sewn bags and leather good have a beautiful simplicity which means once you have one, you won't ever need to look for another! I love that the bags are classic in style, but always have a modern edge or twist that makes them just that little bit better. You might not need another bag, but you will probably want one. Find Weald Handmade and enjoy the beautiful photographic journal of inspiration and products on instagram @wealdhandmade

Four Legs Four Walls - For all those modern dog lovers out there.

We opened our shops at a similar time, which was a also a similar time to when Lupin (our miniature Dachshund) joined our family. I have been obsessed ever since. Favourite item: Terrazzo dog bowls which you can find right here. Find Four Legs Four Walls on instagram @fourlegsfourwalls

Lila - "Modern vintage and sustainable fashion for the modern gal about town".

Now more than ever I want to be able to refresh my wardrobe without constantly adding to the environmental strain that the clothing industry already has. Curated buy Zöe Durrant-Keegan, Lila is a collection of vintage clothing that is selected for its modern appeal; pieces are often neutral in colour and interesting shape. It is a collection that means you don't have to be the one scouring the second hand shops to find the right piece for your wardrobe - that bit is already done. Find Lila on instagram @lila_vintage

Anna Mac - Colour, balance and composition - original artworks and prints.

Not sure how I first came across Anna Mac's art work, but I'm pretty sure it was the shapes and colours that lured me in! Mainly architecturally inspired Anna's pieces are often identifiably Suffolk scapes with perfect Suffolk pinks and abstract sea views. Find Anna on on instagram @_anna_mac_

Vanil - Scandinavian Inspired Living.

Living where we do means that shopping usually involves a train journey to London, so it was very exciting to discover Woodbridge based Vanil. Owner Mandy Leeson seamlessly integrates pieces from small scale makers with larger scale modern design brands such as Ferm living and Muuto. Its definitely one to add on your places to visit if you are ever anywhere nearby.

Present & Correct - Office sundries for the modern workspace.

I think it was the prospect of popping to East Dulwich to collect my order from Present and Correct that finally drew me off my sofa after being glued to it for the first few months after the arrival of my (now 10 year old) twins! I have always had a penchant for stationary and supplies so this was and still is a very exciting find. Present and Correct will transport you back in time with their amazingly sourced assortment of quirky and vintage stationary. Find Present & Correct on instagram @presentandcorrect

Hanna Buck - Colour pops for your walls.

One thing I love about Instagram is the people I have met - probably people I wouldn't have if instagram hadn't joined us up. Hanna is one of those people. We share a love of colour and interiors as well as miniature dachshunds! Previously a graphic designer, Hanna is inspired by bold typography and colour. Her artwork will bring pops of colour and abstract painterly textures where you need them most. If you too #havethisthingwithpink then you will love Hanna's work! Find Hanna on instagram @hannabuck

Folded Side Project - Design | Make | Fold

Emma makes simple yet cleverly intricate handmade origami lampshades and decorations. The 'simple' bit is the beautifully neutral colours and paper choices and the 'cleverly intricate' bit is the perfectly folded shapes and attention to detail. Emma uses contrasting cord and geometric beads to adorn each piece, whilst maintaining a minimal and crisp finish. Consideration is given even to the uncomplicated way they are packaged. Manifesto WomanSecondhand designer and boutique label clothes, accessories & homeware.

Set up with a need and desire to shop more sustainably, Manifesto was created by Sally Emslie with the "aim to prove that you can love shopping, love fashion and love looking amazing without having to shop the high street or spend a fortune. Manifesto woman is for people who care about the planet and love looking good." I am yet to make my first purchase, but this is the kind of shop you need keep to checking back on, stock turnover is fast and you never know when that right piece is going to be there (I find that instagram stories is the best place to keep up to date with the best of the new pieces being showcased and updated regularly). Find Manifesto Woman on instagram @manifestowoman

Tea and Kate - Design destination and homeware lifestyle concept store.

Tea and Kate is based in the small Suffolk seaside town of Felixstowe (another great shop on my doorstep - all products are also available in their online store) where Kate Bradbury curates a range of products which boast a clear minimalistic style telling a story through their design. I love that Kate champions small designers and emerging brands from around the world as well as stocking a wide range of furniture and accessories from leading design brands. My favourite kind of mix. It is the kind of shop you ponder over for a while but when you make the purchase it is a long standing one. Find Tea and Kate on instagram @teaandkate

We are using #presentswithpurpose2019 on social media to show you gifts that will be long standing and can be given with a real purpose in mind. Find us on instagram @white_spacehome
